ELECTRIC DOG FENCE – WIRE GUIDE

Oh no, not wires! Do not panic. You do not have to have an engineering degree or be an electrician to figure this out. You may have noticed that many of the electric dog fences that we carry come with a standard of 500 feet and usually use a 20-Gauge wire, and that there are Wire Upgrade options available. Here we will explain everything you need to know about the wires used, how much to use, and when to use which wire. Please call our friendly customer service line if you have any additional questions.

How Much Wire Do You Need?

Do not go out buying your own wires just yet. Check for how much wire is included in the electric dog fence package you are purchasing. Most of the dog fences we offer come with a standard 500 feet of wire. If you already know the size of the area, just follow the wire guide below. If you are unsure of the size of the area you will be using this system, now is a good time to find out. For how much wire to use, please refer to the chart below.

Use Only Burial Approved Wire

The type of wire used is very important to ensure the device can function properly. The gauge only determines the size of the wire and does not describe what the wire is made with. Burial approved wiring has a long lasting waterproof, polyurethane coat and a solid copper core. If you want to buy your own wires for installation, it is imperative that the wire is “Burial Approved”. This wire is going to be exposed to the elements and must be tough.

Should I Use 20-Gauge or 18-Gauge wire?

Many Electric Dog Fence manufacturers recommend using a standard 20-Guage wire with their units, which is why we ship all of our wired systems with the Premium Heavy Duty 20-Gauge Wire. If you are doing an above ground installation, you may want to use an 18-Guage wire instead. There is a Wire Upgrade option available, if you want to use that specific grade. Some of the systems we offer come with a Wire Upgrade at no additional cost. Please remember, 18-Gauge wire cannot be purchased from a local pet store.

Use 20-Gauge if:

  • Loose, smooth soil or clay.
  • Laying the wire next to a fence.
  • The yard has few trees or vegetation.

Use 18-Gauge if:

  • Rocky terrain.
  • For an above ground installation.
  • The yard has many trees or vegetation.
